An introduction from our Tivy Band Director:

Greetings!

My name is Jason Jung (pronounced young). I am pleased to announce that I have been selected to be the new head band director for Tivy High School! I look forward to meeting everyone and am extremely excited to begin working with students, parents/boosters, and faculty/staff members.

I grew up in Fredericksburg which was where my love of music was cultivated.  I was a member of the Fredericksburg marching band, symphonic band, and jazz ensemble.  During my time in high school I served on the leadership team for two years and earned 3rd chair as a Texas All State Band member.  After graduation, I attended Texas Tech University and earned my bachelor’s degree in Music Education.

I student taught in Fredericksburg under Kenneth Ersch.  After student teaching I served as assistant band director for FISD, where my duties included coordinating the district percussion program and directing the 7th grade band.

After teaching for four years in Fredericksburg, I attended the University of Arkansas where I earned a Masters of Music in Percussion Performance.  During my time at the University of Arkansas, I served as one of 4 graduate assistants.  My duties included writing/arranging, teaching, and coordinating the Razorback Marching Band front ensemble.  I also served as guest lecturer, teaching undergraduate percussion methods classes and percussion ensemble instruction.  I was a 2-year member of the percussion studio and performed in the University wind ensemble, symphony orchestra, percussion ensemble, steel drum ensemble, and the North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra.

Following graduation from the University of Arkansas, I served as assistant band director at Earl Warren High School in San Antonio from 2007-2011.  During my time at Warren I was in charge of the jazz and percussion program.  Under my direction the jazz band had many successful appearances at the St. Mary’s Jazz Festival and the Warren XzilR8 indoor drumline earned 5th, 2nd, and 5th place rankings at TECA state competitions.

I helped to continue a long tradition of excellence at Crystal City ISD, where I served as assistant director from 2013-2015.  During my time a CCISD, we enjoyed huge success placing 40+ students in the jr. high and high school region bands for two consecutive years.  The jazz band also enjoyed a successful showing at the St. Mary’s Jazz Festival.

From 2015-2021 I served as Director of Bands for Uvalde CISD.  Under my direction, the Uvalde Coyote Marching band received 6 consecutive 1st division ratings at UIL marching competition.  The UCB made 4 appearances at UIL Area marching competition where they ranked 6th place in 2020 as an Area finalist. The Uvalde wind ensemble earned 2 consecutive sweepstakes awards as well.  I started and built a steel drum ensemble from 7 members to over 30 members, and had many students qualify for region band and TSSEC.

I will have 22 years’ teaching experience at the completion of this year.

My professional organizations/memberships include Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), Texas Bandmasters Association, and Percussive Arts Society.

I am married to my wonderful wife Jennifer and have 3 step children and 2 crazy dogs.

My interests include spending time on the river or at the beach, gardening, classic vehicles/hot rods, cooking, and playing drums at my church.
